Salon reports that Madonna was booed and several concertgoers walked out during her show in New Orleans when she encouraged her crowd to vote for Obama.
Salon reports the boos erupted during this exchange when Madonna said:
“Who’s registered to vote?” She added: “I don’t care who you vote for as long as you vote for Obama.” Drawing boos in touting Obama over Republican Mitt Romney, Madonna followed: “Seriously, I don’t care who you vote for … Do not take this privilege for granted. Go vote.”
I believe this is a significant event, a canary in the coal mine. Madonna’s crowds have never been conservative or Republican leaning. A similar comment in 2008 of which I am sure there were many would have drawn raucous applause from her crowds.
A ticket to a Madonna tour stop is not cheap. Those that attended the show were undoubtedly hard core fans who may have sacrificed considerable time and effort to get to the show, especially in today’s economy. That Madonna’s statement of support for Obama is booed and met with people actively walking out on the show, should not be underestimated. Whether they realized it or not they were engaging in an impromptu political act on behalf of Mitt Romney. In doing so, I think it is their performance and not Madonna’s that is the most significant act of the evening.
